Introduction

This release is a major step forward in our mission to provide a platform that is more intelligent, accessible, and performant for the most demanding enterprise projects. We're excited to announce the release of Magnolia 6.4! This version is packed with new features and improvements focused on AI Capabilities, Enhanced Usability & Accessibility, and Performance at Scale.

Enhanced usability and accessibility to streamline your work

We are committed to delivering an exceptional and inclusive user interface that empowers authors to work faster and more efficiently. This release introduces major upgrades to core usability features, all built on our modern, accessible New UI.

New global search

Finding content is now faster and more intuitive than ever. Replacing the old find bar, the new Global Search delivers faster results from both internal and external sources, with powerful front-and-center filtering and sorting options to give you precise control. The new architecture decouples the backend search from the front-end, enabling better performance and a more flexible UI.

Modern and accessible forms

We have completely rebuilt forms—the screens where content editing happens—in our new UI and design system, starting with Content Apps. Designed to meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 AA compliance, these forms feature a clean design, improved focus visibility, and full keyboard navigation for a more efficient and enjoyable editing experience. Migration is seamless, as existing YAML form definitions are fully supported.

Deletion & dependencies workflow

Delete with confidence. New, accessible dialogs allow authors to see exactly where an item is used and its publication status before taking action, preventing broken links.

Page-editor apps

Extend Magnolia’s powerful visual editing experience beyond the standard Pages App. This extension makes it easy to create custom, channel-specific apps (e.g., for digital signage or mobile content) with low-code configuration, and without requiring custom Java.

Expanded AI capabilities for smarter content workflows

AI is becoming an integral part of the Magnolia experience, and this release significantly expands our AI capabilities to help you streamline media workflows and accelerate content creation.

Magnolia AI is now more open and powerful than ever. New features include:

AI-powered image editing

Keep your editors in the flow with a powerful AI-driven image editor right inside Magnolia. Easily change aspect ratios, set focal points, remove backgrounds, or add and remove elements without switching to external tools. Creating multiple variants for different channels has never been easier.

Image recognition with any AI model

We've opened up our image recognition module. You are no longer limited to AWS and can now leverage any multi-modal LLM of your choice for more accurate, context-aware image tagging.

AI-generated asset metadata

A new action in the Assets app automatically populates metadata fields such as title, description, and alt text. It's multi-language capable and can be triggered manually, in bulk, or fully automated. This improves SEO and accessibility while saving authors valuable time.

These new AI features are enabled in our modern interface via Component Islands, an extensibility layer that lets developers build and maintain custom UI components that work smoothly in Magnolia's New UI, ensuring your solutions are future-proof.

Performance built for enterprise scale

Magnolia 6.4 introduces powerful new services designed to make the platform faster and more resilient, especially in large-scale asset management and content publishing scenarios.

Key performance optimizations include:

Swift Publication

We've re-architected publishing to be faster and more reliable. This new asynchronous engine reduces publishing time by over 70% in complex multi-cluster setups. Authors can continue working without interruption while large publications run in the background.

DAM External Binaries

Seamlessly manage massive asset libraries by storing binary files in an external system like AWS S3 while keeping the metadata in Magnolia. This keeps your core repository lightweight and fast without sacrificing any of our rich, native Magnolia DAM features.

Package Manager

A powerful new app to streamline content workflows between different environments. Easily define, build, and transfer large volumes of content as a single package—perfect for pre-staging major launches or synchronizing content from production to a local testing environment.

Finally, this release includes our upgrade to Jakarta EE 10, future-proofing the platform with robust security patches, performance optimizations, and access to the latest improvements from the Java ecosystem.

Upgrading to Magnolia 6.4

We encourage you to upgrade to take advantage of the latest features. Magnolia 6.4, one of our biggest releases of Magnolia ever made, ships with a dedicated and direct migration path from Magnolia 6.2 to 6.4, and we will continue to invest in providing guidance and tooling to reduce the cost and effort of migration.

We’ve made the move to Magnolia 6.4 ourselves and it’s powering everything we do: our website, Academy, and Partner Portal. Join us on 6.4 and unlock the speed, simplicity, and strength of the platform we trust for our own digital experience.
