Previously, Virgin Holidays had used different technologies and content management systems for each of its eleven brand websites. Using Magnolia to consolidate all of these into a single platform means that going forward, all sites will be managed centrally under one service-orientated architecture. After a proof of concept, where Virgin Holidays evaluated multiple platforms, the company decided to adopt Magnolia because of its exceptional flexibility and extensibility, its scalability and its cost to value proposition.
The first project to go live is Virgin Atlantic Travel Plus. After booking a flight with Virgin Holidays’ sister company Virgin Atlantic, travelers can now purchase additional holiday services on the site, such as car hire and hotels. The site’s content editors were trained on Magnolia in very little time, and are now much more independent:
Virgin Holidays also takes advantage of Magnolia’s workflow capabilities, making sure that all content has been approved adequately before going live.
Next on the list is Virgin Holidays’ flagship site, virginholidays.co.uk. The site is responsible for the bulk of the organization’s traffic and sales. It will share the same architecture as Virgin Atlantic Travel Plus, but with much richer content and a larger editorial team. Currently, it’s running on a bespoke CMS solution, requiring a lot of technical skills to maintain.
